Do you feel that people are spamming your DM feed?

How many “thanks for following me” or “thank you for the follow” messages do you have in your DM area right now in your Twitter profile?

I’ve tried several tools, some more effective than others, but many still require more effort than I’d like to put towards it to keep my DM box manageable.

In my opinion, Twitter could resolve this by simply adding a a check box in someones profile that you could check if you want to grant permission for DM’s from a particular follower. At the moment, anybody you follow can send you a DM…and most do in the form of “thanks for following”.

Twitter tip: STOP SENDING “THANKS FOR FOLLOWING” AUTOMATIC MESSAGES!

Since Twitter isn’t going to change any time soon…

I decided to make this post to solicit some ideas on how you manage your DM SPAM. What tools to you use (paid or free)? How much time do you spend managing your DM’s? Do you even check your DM’s?

Here’s what I’m doing…

Based on the comment feedback, I’ll probably want to get in contact with you for a little project that I’m putting together. Leave your comment and your real email address in the comment form (no one else will see it) and I’ll try to respond via email.

Looking for intelligent answers and insights here. You “may” leave your recommendations in the form of an affiliate link in the comment as long as you identify the link as an affiliate link in your comment. We’re not looking for one line affiliate recommendations. I won’t approve blatant affiliate promotions. Instead make an intelligent, interesting, informative comment.

So here’s the question to the readers of The How To Project:

How do you handle your Twitter DM box and which tools do you use to make managing your Twitter DM box easier?

Your turn…comments??

After 20 comments I’ll reveal a FREE piece of software that I personally use and like. No cost and no email opt-in required. So leave your well thought out comment so I can post my solution.

“etiquette

/ettiket/

• noun the code of polite behavior in a society.

— ORIGIN French, ‘list of ceremonial observances of a court’, also ‘label, etiquette’, from Old French estiquette”

Hmm…

The code of “polite behavior” in a society. The key word here is “society”. Society to me is the same as “community” and that’s exactly what Twitter is. It’s a community.

Actually, Twitter itself isn’t a community…its a collage of many mini communities. These mini communities are all the individual Twitter users who follow other Twitter users. Followers often check out the profiles of the people they follow AND follow who they follow and who follows them (confusing I know…but if you’re on Twitter you know exactly what I’m talking about).

It’s mind boggling, actually, if you think about how many unique communities are created in Twitter. There are so many combination’s and ways to connect with “like minded” people…if that’s what you want. You can even connect with people who aren’t necessarily “like minded”. You can connect with others who have different interests and view points just to get a rounded perspective if you wish.

I mean, if you look at all the ways you connect and follow people…creating your own little community…there are literally Billions if not TRILLIONS of community combination’s.

So……

What the heck is Twitter etiquette anyway?

How can you possibly follow acceptable “polite behavior” with so many combination’s of “societies” within Twitter itself????

Answer: You can’t. It’s impossible.

It’s funny. As I write this post, I’m having a conversation on Twitter about “etiquette” and the feedback has been interesting. It really boils down to opinion. And…the absolute BEST part about your individual community on Twitter is that you have FULL control.

Do you want to promote your business on Twitter?

Do you send auto Direct Messages when someone follows you (a heated debate is constantly going on over this subject)

Do you use foul language on Twitter?

Do you answer all your DM’s and reply to everybody who replies to you or asks questions?

Do you…(put your “etiquette” rule here)

etc

One of the best posts I’ve read about Twitter Etiquette was written by Danny Brown on his blog:

http://dannybrown.me/2009/02/20/the-twitter-rulebook/

Check out his blog post and remember…

On Twitter, there really is no “etiquette”. Do what you want.

Here’s an overview of just a couple of things I’m doing in 2009 to produce an nice little income online.

What are you doing? I’d love to see your comments.

Don’t forget, you can leave audio or video comments from your webcam. If you have a self-hosted Wordpress blog like this one you can collect audio and video comments on your blog to. There is a plug-in I use called Riffly Audio/Video Comments and you can get it by clicking HERE.

The video player I’m using in this post is actually an embedded video from Facebook. I prefer the size and look over a YouTube embedded video. The logo isn’t as obtrusive and it only shows up when you mouse over the video.

It’s super easy to add the videos to your blog. In fact, just like YouTube, you just copy and paste an embed code and plop it right in your post. Easy peasy.
